SUMBA TRAVEL GUIDES :
Sumba is a small island in East Nusa Tenggara, perhaps best known for its
intricate ikat weavings, tribal war game rituals, horses, and 2000 year old
sculptured megalithic tombs. Sumba weavings utilize a long and tedious method
that can take several months to complete. Using natural dyes Sumba ikat produces
bold images of humans and animals and can be best seen in Praliu Village just
outside of Waingapu.
Megalithic tombs near Waikabubak, Tarung and in the district if Anakalang give
testimony to Sumba Island ancient cultural roots as does an important lunar new
year ceremony every October in nearby Sodan. One of the more interesting
traditional villages, Sodan is where a sacred drum with a playing surface
reputedly of human skin is used. The Pasola however is arguably Sumba most
exciting ritual as a hundred or more men riding bareback on horses dressed in
colorful attire and battle with lances to the point where injuries sometimes
occur.
