Balinese Subak Irrigation System

Subak is known as irrigation system for rice fields in Bali. This complex ritual had been created since ninth century to worship Dewi Sri, the Goddess of rice and prosperity. Subak Irrigation System manages water irrigation from lakes in Bali such as Danau Bratan or Danau Batur and shares it fairly through rivers to rice fields of every farmer who has become a Subak member. The Klian (head) of Subak has to ensure that all farmers get water for their rice fields. That is the reason all rice fields in Bali are beautifully formed as terraces.
The main Subak in Danau Batur is organized by regional water temple named Jero Gede, also known as a chief priest at Pura Ulun Danu Batur. This priest shall responsible to held a ceremony Pemayuh Toga in every 5 years at Tilem Sasih Kalima (death moon at the 5th month). The priest and farmers hope that lakes lakes throughout Bali become holier than before. They also hope that God will keep those rice fields prosperous all the time.
Every planning about Subak in society have to be consulted with the priest because it can affect the whole irrigation system. Balinese believe that Subak can remove plant disease and pollution from pesticide both in water or soil. Balinese will keep this system to irrigate their fields even the new methods of irrigation have been developed.
