Visitors to Indonesia will find that getting around in the largest archipelago is relatively easy, even though delays, and changes to schedules are common place. These are as much a part of the Indonesia experience as anything else and the whole should be treated with a composure and understanding. There is very little ranting and raving will do expect to embarrass all concerned and possibly exacerbate the situation. Flat tires, over heated engines, tropical storms, washed out roads and mud slides are not deliberately designed to make your visit to Indonesia uncomfortable or to make your trip around Indonesia delays.
Most trips can be arranged through local travel agents or tour operators. The latter are usually found in the popular Indonesia tourist hangouts. There are literally so much to see and do in Indonesia that any one travel agent is unlikely to have all the information an adventurous travelers will need. Get as far as you can by conventional means and arrange the rest as you need it and as you go. This way the once-in-a lifetime river boat trip in East Kalimantan, surfers paradise on Pulau Asu in North Sumatra, white water rafting adventure in west Java and Bali, and tribal discovery in the jungles of Irian Jaya are possible.
The suggestion is to plan holiday in Indonesia well ahead and make alternatives, just in case something goes wrong or plans have to be changed at short notice. And as a wise old Indonesian said. " go with the flow ".
All major cities in Indonesia are linked by air, sea and bus. Local transport at each destination is readily available from pedi-cabs and mini-buses to air air conditioned coaches, limousine services and even private air charter.
Visitors to Indonesia must have a valid passport for at least six months from the date of arrival and have proof of onward flight. Not having one or the other of these will cause problems, so be warned.
