INDONESIA
Tanjung Pinang is the busy and vibrant little port town located on the Bintan Island which is in the free trade area of Batam and the other islands in this area of north Indonesia. There is a very close proximity to Singapore from here as well as Malaysia. With this two hour boat trip from Singapore you can be enjoying the cultural and interesting town of
Tanjung Pinang as well as the beautiful white sand beaches and great temples and other attractions. The markets are also some of the most interesting places to witness, they are positively thriving with local action, hustle bustle and bartering as well as offering the opportunity to pick up some really interesting items for low costs and try your hand at bartering for food and other things. As well as all of this there are some interesting museums and historical areas that are well worth a visit. The museum shows the sea trade related past with the colonial history and the explanations that tie in with the older town area.
Tanjung Pinang offers a lot to the traveller who wishes to experience a great combination of culture, Indonesian classic tropical beauty and an interesting nautical history.
Tanjung Pinang is located in the western part of the Bintan Bay which is a great beautiful white sand bay offering views out into the reef encrusted seas with the distant Singapore just on the very horizon. This is an excellent escape from the city of Singapore for leisure travellers and those who are visiting the Riau Archipelago for business reasons. These also include travellers from Jakarta and all over the main cities of south East Asia. Most of the buildings here are either colonial or of the traditional style on long stilts which allow the house to be protect from the tidal surges that are infrequent but regular over longer time periods. As well as all of this there are of course some modern building used in the trade industries as well as for tourism. There are a number of hotels in Tanjung Pinang varying in size and capacity from boutique Tanjung Pinang hotels and business resorts located in the centre of
Tanjung Pinang as well as outside the town and along the coast and even around the harbour area.
There area a few other attractions worth noting in the
Tanjung Pinang area including the huge Raja Haji Fisabillah Monument which stands 28 meters high and symbolises the struggle of the island and the memory of the great Raja Haji who died in battle fighting against the Dutch in for Malacca in 1784. There is also the large Buddhist Temple known as the Sungai Ular or ‘snake river’ which is close to the harbour and intensely beautiful. Another reason to travel here is that as you would imagine, the seafood is of a great standard here and you can enjoy it at any of the beachside or quayside restaurants that are infamous and well worth trying out while you are staying in the interesting and beautiful
Tanjung Pinang.
