Batam is an island located with the Riau islands of Indonesia. Batam is interestingly very close to not only Singapore but also Malaysia as well as the other northern islands of Indonesia. As well as this there are the famous ‘Barelang’ bridges which are the main attraction and icons of the island of Batam. These bridges were built with help from the German Government. There is also the holding camp for the Vietnamese 'Boat People' who are mainly refugees who attempted to escape the communist regime. There are museums dedicated to this as well as temples and hospitals to those who did not make it.
