Maluku is the name given to the eastern most region of Indonesia before Iran Jaya and Timur. It is a collection of small islands a which were known to the Dutch as the Spice Islands of Moluccas and were the perfect and often only places in the world where you could find nutmeg, mace, cloves and several other spices. Maluku features over 630 separate islands, some of which are inhabited and some of which are not, there is a huge amount of water in this area where these tiny islands are spread out around such a large area in the most active area of the Pacific Ring of Fire. You will find many volcanic peaks around the Maluku islands and as well as some incredible beaches and and unbelievable underwater gardens of corals and large fish.
Maluku is there fore classically Indonesian and the perfect place to enjoy a beach holiday away from the cities and other tourists that you are likely to find in the more main stream areas. If you are a diver or a snorkeler with a taste for relaxation and tropical bliss, then look no further.
If you are traveling to Maluku you will probably come thought the capital which is known as Ambon and offers the main airport of the province as well as the main seaport. There area plenty of seaports and airfields as well as charterable flight available in the Maluku province area due to the logistics of travel around the different islands. During 1999 and 2004, there were bad riots in the Maluku islands although peace and normality have been restored and people are quietly getting on with their lives. The Maluku have never been on major popularity for visitors so despite what some of the travel companies may say, the Maluku island are an have been safe o visit for years and you do not need any kind of pass to visit any of the islands apart from certain national park islands.
Some o the more interesting features located around Maluku include the remnants of the old forts which were built by the Dutch East Indies Company. There is a great museum known as Siwa Lima where local arts and crafts are displayed as well as the links that these have to the traditional cultures and historic events.
The ANZAC War cemetery commemorates those who suffered and died in the war and is a good place for anyone of personal interest to visit. The fore mentioned diving is also a great reason to visit the the Maluku islands where you will see incredible sea life around the island of Pombo, Hunimoa and Ambon. These crystal clear waters offer bright corals and marine beauty to everybody from experienced divers to the first timers and there is also a great deal to see snorkeling as well.
