Uluwatu is the most Southwestern point of Bali and is highly significant to the local people as well as the tourists who visit Bali. The Uluwatu Temple is one of the 7 mother temples of Bali meaning that all of the Balinese Hindus on the island much visit the temple for special ceremonies at certain parts of the year. This sea temple is also where you will see the Kacak Dance which is an incredible world famous performance of over 30 men as a vocal choir dancing and singing in a group trance while traditional stories are acted out in full costume. There is a pantomime style quality to this show which is partly traditional and partly for the tourist’s amusement. The Kacak dance is carried out every night through the sunset with views in this ancient temple and offers a superb insight into the Balinese culture and their love for performance. Other attractions of Uluwatu include the consistent waves that break over 5 different parts of the reef almost every day of the year as well as the natural beauty of the cliffs and the boutique resorts of the area offering excellent views from beautiful seafront cottages.

Uluwatu is located on the Bukit (hill) peninsula which is being developed quickly at the moment from an unspoilt landscape overlooking the bays and reefs of Bali into a built up high collection of high prices hotels and villa set ups bring Bali onto the same path as Hawaii did 20 years ago. There are two golf courses close to Uluwatu and the dreamland beach is being transformed from its former beauty into a tourist attraction with plenty of shopping and dinning opportunities. There are also plenty of traditional cafes and modern international restaurants overlooking the sea as well as dotted around the inland area where the hotels, villas and surf lodges are located.

And now a word on the surfing offered at and around Uluwatu, Uluwatu offers five main breaks, the peak (or peaks) is two peaks which break in any swell size, the racetrack drains at low tide offering fast hollow left hand barrels that wrap around the cliff and breaks in most swells although when small it is fast and shallow. The outside corner breaks at 6ft + offering world class waves and if you don’t already know about it then you should only be watching it from the cliffs! Temples is the last wave which is usually the least crowded and located right in front of the temple. All of these waves are lefts breaking over coral reefs and are always crowded, Uluwatu picks up the most swell of any of the breaks in Bali and is a good choice to get the largest size possible in any swell. If you are not a surfer then you will find the cafes and restaurants on the cliffs overlooking the area and excellent spot to watch the action, the set up is similar around the rest of the waves although these left handers vary in personality offering you the full bag of goodies.
